The Save the Feet and Keep Walking campaign, published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care on August 3, 2024, highlights the critical need for early screening of foot problems in diabetic patients. Co-authored by Dr. Amit Gupta alongside prominent experts such as Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Dr. Brij Mohan Makkar, and Dr. Banshi Saboo, the campaign aimed to screen over 54,000 diabetic patients across India. The findings showed that nearly 25% of those screened were at high risk for foot complications, including neuropathy and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
This landmark study calls for the adoption of early screening protocols to prevent severe outcomes like foot ulcers and amputations, which are common complications of diabetes. The campaign's goal is to raise awareness about diabetic foot care, improve early intervention, and ultimately enhance the quality of life for diabetic patients across India.
