It is recommended that all patients with diabetes should be encouraged to participate in diabetes self-management education (DSME) to enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities for self-care. The diabetes self-management support assists in sustaining the skills and behaviors needed for long term self-management. DSMES is required at the time of diagnosis, annually, when complications arise and at the time of transition of care. The goal of DSMES is to improve clinical outcomes, health status, quality of life and reduce the cost of care. DSMES is patient-centric and sessions are often conducted in groups or at times individually with the help of technology.
